Johnny Wyman Murphy, age 82, of the Germany Branch Community in Savannah, Tennessee passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and the familiar comforts of home.
Born on November 9, 1942, in Olive Hill, Tennessee, Johnny was the beloved son of the late Wyman and Elizabeth “Lib” Murphy. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Murphy, and leaves behind a legacy rooted in faith, family, and the quiet joys of a life well lived.
In 1969, Johnny married Sue Dicus, originally of Clifton, Tennessee. After their marriage, they made their home in the Germany Branch Community, where they built a life of love and purpose together. Johnny was a devoted husband, a proud father to his daughter, Vicki Lay (Philip) of Savannah, TN, and a loving grandfather to Jack DeBerry, III (Leslie) of Olive Hill, TN; Jill DeBerry Wild (Tanner) of Huntington, WV; and Mary Lay of Miami, FL.
His great-grandchildren brought him immense joy and pride: Walker Wild, Daisy Wild, and Carter Wild of Huntington, WV; and JB DeBerry, IV, Kaile Cossey, and Jamison Cossey of Olive Hill, TN.
Johnny dedicated 35 years of hard work to Olive Hill Hardwoods, where he was known for his steadfast work ethic and good-natured presence. Outside of work, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life—hunting, working his mules, riding his grandkids on the four-wheeler, rocking on the front porch, and watching Gunsmoke. He especially cherished the music of his nephew, Charlie Dicus, whose playing brought joy to his heart.
To know Johnny was to know warmth, loyalty, and a quiet strength that brought comfort to those around him. His life will be honored in a graveside service at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Jowers Cemetery in the Olive Hill Community.
