Matthew Morey Obituary

Matthew Robert Morey, born September 8, 1966, passed away tragically in a motor vehicle accident on November 22, 2025, at the age of 59. A lifelong soul of grit, passion, and unmistakable character, Matt lived life on his own terms, bringing energy and heart to everything he touched.

Born to Timothy Clark Morey and Anna Hill, Matt called many places home throughout the years but always kept close ties to his roots. He was a man who loved deeply and lived boldly—whether it was riding motorcycles with the wind at his back, casting a line out on quiet waters, or stirring up a hearty meal in the kitchen. He found peace in the outdoors, joy in raising just a little hell, and purpose in the traditions and camaraderie of the American Legion, which held a special place in his heart.

Matt was united in marriage to his beloved late wife, Deborah Austin Morey, on April 25, 1998. Their union was one of strength and love, and together they built a life surrounded by family and memories.

He is survived by his devoted children: Jilleen Buttrey, Lynn Buttrey, and Chris Buttrey. Matt's pride and greatest joy were his grandchildren: Whitney Buttrey, Jasemine Ellis, Delaney Wright, Kyle Buttrey, Montana Staggs, Lacy Staggs, Austin Anderson, Hali Ellis, and Mallorie Holcombe (Eric). His love extended beyond immediate family to include great-grandchildren: Emily Buttrey, Jupiter Clenney, Jalisco Clenney, Jude Staggs, Kobi Ellis, Axel Ellis, McKenna Holcombe, Draven Holcombe, Kaiden Holcombe, Serenity Holcombe, Trevor Holcombe, Waylon Buttrey, and Taylin West.

Matt also held a special bond with his niece Jennifer Carter (Adam), and he is lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law: Sue Martin (Don), Eva Austin, and Elizabeth Lambert.

Matt was preceded in death by his beloved wife Deborah Austin Morey; his parents, Timothy Clark Morey and Anna Hill; his brother, Tim Morey; and grandchildren Emily Ellis and Dakota Buttrey. He was also preceded by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, whose memories he carried with him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to American Legion Post 97 in Adamsville, TN—a fitting tribute to a man who valued service, community, and brotherhood.

Matt will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His stories, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
