Verlyn M. Ludwig, age 89, passed away peacefully at his home on July 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and children. His final moments were filled with love, comfort, and the presence of those who meant the most to him.
Verlyn was born on June 3, 1937, in Forreston, Illinois, to Melvin and Esther Ludwig. He lived a life defined by faith, family, hard work, and kindness.
On March 27, 1959, Verlyn married the love of his life, Velma Ludwig, in Fulton, Illinois. Together they shared 67 wonderful years of marriage, building a home centered on faith, love, and devotion to family.
A lifelong farmer, Verlyn dedicated most of his life to caring for dairy and beef cattle while raising crops. His strong work ethic and love for the land were evident in everything he did. Following his retirement from farming, he enjoyed driving a school bus, continuing to serve his community with the same dependable spirit that had characterized his life.
Verlyn was a faithful member of Olive Hill Baptist Church East. His faith was an important part of his life, and he treasured the fellowship, friendships, and worship he shared with his church family.
Known for his warm smile and outgoing personality, Verlyn had a way of making everyone feel welcome. His kindness, generosity, and genuine concern for others touched countless lives.
Nothing brought Verlyn greater joy than spending time with his family. He especially loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events and celebrating their accomplishments. He also enjoyed showing cattle and took great pride in his Oliver 1650 tractor, participating in numerous tractor pulls over the years. An avid collector, he was especially proud of his collection of toy Oliver tractors.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Velma Ludwig of Olive Hill, Tennessee; his children, Debra (Don) Parker of Olive Hill, Tennessee, Mark (Susan) Ludwig of the Village of Lakewood, Illinois, Troy (Paula) Ludwig of Monroe, Wisconsin, and Susan (Robert) Shetter of Oakland, Tennessee; his brother, Lorence Ludwig; his grandchildren, Alyssa Pittman, Chris Pittman, Jessica Dawson, Aura Ludwig, Gabby Holland, Kennedy Ripp, Chase Shetter, Ty Shetter, and Marcus Shetter; five great-grandchildren, with three more precious blessings on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Esther Ludwig; his brother, Milford Ludwig; and his sister, Sharon.
Verlyn will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, faithful Christian, hardworking farmer, and loyal friend. His quiet strength, steadfast faith, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family leave a legacy that will continue for generations. While his presence will be deeply missed, his life serves as a lasting example of faith, humility, integrity, and unconditional love.
