Wayne Douglas Mitchell, age 85, passed away April 3rd, 2024 at AHC Nursing Home and Rehab in Selmer, TN. He was born April 27, 1938 in Selmer, TN to the late Ward Mitchell and Lockie Higginbottom Mitchell. As a career, Doug was a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company. After retirement he assisted his wife, Barbara, in her private Day Care as a teacher and was also a real estate agent for six years. He was a member of First Christian Church in Selmer where he was a very active member and elder until recent years due to declining health. He made sure to raise his family in church and taught them to love Jesus. He believed richly in prayer and would tell his family each evening to make sure they said their prayers by asking them, "What are you supposed to do before you go to bed? Say your prayers!" Doug taught his children and grandchildren the importance of reading scripture and set the example by reading Proverbs on a daily basis. He had a very kind heart and a smile that would light up the room, grinning from ear to ear. Never speaking badly about anyone, he always set an example. He was an avid whistler and really enjoyed making homemade popcorn, trips to the Chinese Buffet, coffee and sweets, particularly vanilla ice cream. He enjoyed taking car rides to observe the scenery. Doug loved going to yard sales and when asked what he was looking for he would say, "I don't know, but I will when I find it!" He loved to be silly and make up rhyming phrases. He enjoyed family time playing games and usually would always win. When the family went on trips he would always say when they got home, "Home again, home again, jiggety jog!"
He is survived by his wife Barbara Thomas Mitchell of Selmer, whom he was married to for 63 wonderful years and loved her very much. One sister Sue Howie (Bobby) of Selmer. Two daughters, Regina Hollingsworth of Selmer, Pollyanna Nipper (Bruce) of Olive Branch, MS, one son Wayne Douglas Mitchell II (Julie) of Selmer; six grandchildren Amber Broyles (Colton), Anna Marie Gaytan (Tyler), Travis Hollingsworth, Lincoln Mitchell, Olivia Mitchell (Cory), Molly Mitchell, and four great grandchildren Leighem, Brycen, Remington, and Alyston Broyles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert D. Mitchell and Joe Mitchell.
